Registering a Children Home with Ofsted Application Support

Ofsted Children home Services

Care tips can support you to register a children’s home with Ofsted. This will involve supporting you with the application itself and preparing for the fit person interview. Your SC1 provider application must be submitted online. The application should include details about your proposed facility's location, resources, staffing arrangements, and safeguarding policies and procedures.

Applicants must demonstrate knowledge and understanding of their responsibilities under the relevant legislation and explain how they will address the physical, emotional, educational, and social needs of children.

Ofsted would want to know the fees you will charge for your service. They would want to know the age range of the children and if the home will be single-sex occupancy. They would also want you to declare the highest number of children you wish to accommodate under the following categories:

  • Emotional or behavioural difficulties.
  • Physical disabilities.
  • Learning disabilities.
  • Mental disorders.
  • Drug problems.
  • Alcohol problems.
  • Sensory impairment.
  • The Application and Evidence Requirements

The initial step in the registration process for establishing a children’s home is to understand the regulations set forth by Ofsted (Office for Standards in Education, Children’s Services and Skills).

Prospective providers must demonstrate that they meet all the requirements outlined in the Care Standards Act 2000. This involves not only demonstrating that the appropriate facilities are available but also ensuring that suitable staff and safeguarding procedures are in place. You must comply with the nine quality standards for children’s homes.

The provider SC1 application form must be accompanied by the following:

  • A statement of purpose
  • Policies and procedures for protecting children
  • Strategies for managing behaviour
  • Staff qualifications
  • Financial proof showing that they are stable financially
  • Safer recruitment must be carried out to ensure that the staff and management are suitable to work with children and young people. The home premises need to provide a suitable and nurturing environment for the children in your care. There should also be evidence of financial viability and planning permission for the premises that would be used as a children home.

The registered manager, responsible individual, and anyone listed on the SC1 who will have direct involvement in the service will be required to complete an SC2 form, which is automatically triggered upon submission of the provider application.
